The abstention of local fishermen from fishing activity during the breeding months and the participation of their fleet in coastal sea clearing, are included the “Amorgorama” pilot program, which will be implemented in Amorgos. Achieving their second goal requires the cessation of fishing in April and May by all commercial and recreational fishing vessels.

The purpose of the program was presented at the meeting of the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Mr. Simos Kedikoglou with the Mayor of Amorgos Mr. Lefteris Karaiskos and the President of the Professional Association of Fishermen of Amorgos Mr. Michalis Crossman.

The mayor of the island, explained that the program is necessary for the local community and the preservation and survival of the traditional profession of coastal fishing. “It is of great importance in the economy and especially in the economy of a small island such as Amorgos,” he added.

He also spoke about the importance of fish stocks and the practical support of the local community to the fishermen’s initiative. “We want Amorgos to become a model in our country but also in Europe,” he stressed.

For his part, Mr. Crossman referred to the importance of state aid to this initiative and to the Blue Marine Foundation, which supports their work.

In his statement, Mr. Kedikoglou expressed his joy for such an initiative, typically saying “Let’s make Amorgos an example throughout Greece.” He did not fail to mention the fishing tourism promoted by the Ministry of Tourism together with the Ministry of Tourism and the creation of an international campaign.

“I would like Amorgos to be a component of the advertising campaign, together with my particular homeland, North Evia, which was tested by the fires. “These are two areas that I would like to be at the forefront of this campaign,” he said.

A rapid resumption of talks and continued co-operation was agreed between the two sides.
