Iraqi man arrested in Athens, is accused of being an ISIS terrorist



A 34-year-old Iraqi man, accused of being an ISIS terrorist, was arrested Monday noon following after a joint operation by the Greek Counter-Terrorism Unit and the National Intelligence Services (EYP), in the center of Athens.


The man had arrived to Greece via the migrants’ Lesvos-route in 2018. He has reportedly twice submitted application for asylum and both times his asylum application was rejected.


The man who lives in Greece with his wife and four children has reportedly submitted on more asylum application which is currently pending.


The man was arrested in his home in the area of Omonia square in downtown Athens.

According to a police statement, the information that the man was in Athens came from a “foreign collaborating service.


State broadcaster ERT reported that the man was identified on videos posted on internet as he was making propaganda in favor of the ISIS. The videos are from 2014.


The arrested Iraqi man will be brought before the Prosecutor of the Athens Court of First Instance on Tuesday morning.
