Special Olympics Hellas in Vamvakou

ATHENS -- As part of its mission to offer a variety of interesting life experiences to their athletes, Special Olympics Hellas is taking a field trip to the village of Vamvakou in Laconia.

The athletes and their parents will be hosted by the Vamvakou Revival Team from September 17 to 19 as part of the Vamvakou Revival initiative, which is made possible with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Through the Special Olympics Hellas Families Program, 20 athletes will have the chance to take part in novel educational, sporting, cultural, and recreational events. Hiking on the village trails, riding electric bikes, taking part in sensory and scientific workshops at V.Lab (the Vamvakou Technology Lab, fully powered by SNF), and enjoying music and sports events are just some of the activities that the Special Olympics Hellas athletes will be able to experience during their stay in Vamvakou.

On Sunday, September 19, 2021, in the courtyard of the Vamvakou School, Special Olympics Hellas and the Municipality of Sparta will sign a Memorandum of Cooperation within the framework of the nonprofit’s Development Program. The goal of the collaboration is to develop sports programs and activities for people with intellectual disabilities in the region of Vamvakou, welcoming new athletes into the Special Olympics Hellas extended family to experience inclusion, camaraderie, and belonging through sports.

Both Special Olympics Hellas and the Vamvakou Revival Initiative collaborate closely with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), which provides support for their work
