Why the Greek island where Mamma Mia was filmed needs to be on your travel wishlist

Mamma Mia was filmed on the Greek island of Skopelo

The Greek Island where Mamma Mia was filmed never fails to attract visitors with its beautiful beaches, amazing scenery and picturesque town - we take a look at why it's worth adding to the wishlist.

Ever since it came out in 2008, Mamma Mia! has become a classic feel-good summer hit, and not just because of the ABBA music and performances from stars including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Dominic Cooper, to name a few.

It's difficult not to get a serious dose of wanderlust when watching the film thanks to the beautiful sun-soaked Greek island backdrop, the white-washed buildings, beautiful villages and those azure ocean waters.

But what Greek Island was Mamma Mia filmed on?

For the first film, it was the breathtaking shores and towns of the Greek island of Skopelos which caught the production crew's attention, and it's not difficult to see why.

For a start it's not quite as famous as the likes of Rhodes, Crete and Santorini, meaning smaller crowds, which we assume is ideal if you're looking to film a blockbuster.

Then there's the fact that Skopelos has everything you could want for some major 'dream holiday' fodder.

PROMOTED STORIES

Think beaches which are surrounded by dense, lush green scenery, with stretches of white sands that lead to crystalline waters - one example is Kastani Beach, which served as a filming location for Mamma Mia.

Then of course there are all of the beautiful walking trails nestled amidst the green trees and colourful plants, as well as the white-washed buildings, charming boutiques and local cafes tucked away in the alleyways and cobbled streets in Skopelos Town itself.

Most of the Mamma Mia filming was done on location across the beaches and the town, as well as some of the quieter scenic spots.
