Sanctions against Turkey for illegal drilling in Cypriot waters extended by EU

The European Union extended sanctions against Turkey for its illegal drilling in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The EU said on Thursday that sanctions against Turkish entities involved in the illegal drilling would continue until November 2022.

Turkey was first hit by EU sanctions in November 2019 for continuous maritime provocations against Greece and Cyprus by attempting to illegally extract natural gas deposits.

In a statement, the EU reiterated its “full solidarity with Cyprus regarding respect for its sovereignty and sovereign rights in accordance with international law”.

The sanctions would be kept under constant review and expanded if necessary, the EU said.
