Statue of Mahatma Gandhi goes up in Athens, Greece



Α statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled today in Athens to stand as a strong symbol of friendship and shared values.


Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Greece Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis jointly unveiled Mahatma Gandhi’s statue near the Indian Embassy in Athens.


“Universality and timelessness of the Mahatma’s message is recognised around the world,” tweeted Jaishankar after the unveiling.


Greek Foreign Minister Mr Nikos Dendias attended the unveiling ceremony which reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to promoting peace and stability worldwide.


Earlier in a meeting with the EAM Jaishankar, the Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction about the implementation of the Indian proposal resulting in the erection of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in front of the Indian Embassy building.
